(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Don Carcieri could earn a new term as the head of government of the Ocean State, according to a poll by Brown University. 46 per cent of respondents in Rhode Island would support Carcieri in a head-to-head contest against Democratic lieutenant governor Charles Fogarty.
Carcieri—a Republican—was elected in November 2002, defeating Democrat challenger Myrth York with 55 per cent of the vote. Carcieri took over in January 2003 from fellow GOP member Lincoln Almond.
Earlier this month, Carcieri presented the state’s budget. The $6.58 billion U.S. spending plan calls for specific cuts in jobs, benefits and services, as well as renewed investment in education and technology programs. The governor called the budget “one of the most difficult tasks that I have faced in the three years as governor.”
The next gubernatorial election in the Ocean State is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1951, Rhode Island has had five Republican and seven Democratic heads of government.
