(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Maria Cantwell could earn a new term as one of Washington’s representatives to the United States Senate, according to a poll by Strategic Vision. 48 per cent of respondents in the Evergreen State would vote for the Democrat incumbent, while 40 per cent would support Republican challenger Mike McGavick.

Cantwell was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, defeating incumbent Republican Slade Gorton by just over 2,000 ballots. Cantwell had previously served for one term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In July 2005, McGavick announced he was stepping down as president and chief executive officer of Safeco to explore a Senate run.

On Apr. 17, U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney headlined a fundraising event for McGavick in Everett. Cheney declared, “It’s vital to have the wisdom and character and vision of Mike McGavick in the nation’s capital.”

Support for Cantwell fell by one point since March, while backing for McGavick increased by the same margin.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 7.
