In a survey by Rasmussen Reports, 44 per cent of respondents in Michigan would support Democratic incumbent Jennifer Granholm, while 43 per cent would vote for Republican challenger Dick DeVos. Studies by EPIC/MRA and Mitchell Research & Communications also show the contenders separated by a one-point margin.
Granholm—a Democrat—was elected in November 2002, defeating Republican challenger Dick Posthumus with 51 per cent of the vote.
In June 2005, Dick DeVos—former chief executive officer at Alticor and husband of former state Republican chairwoman Betsy DeVos—announced he would seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
Earlier this month, Granholm discussed energy policies in the Democratic National Committee (DNC) podcast, saying, “We’re increasing our investment in ethanol production in Michigan. In the near future we’re going to have five corn-to-ethanol plants on line in Michigan.”
The gubernatorial election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1943, Michigan has had five Republican and four Democratic heads of government.
