Koizumi has served as Japan’s head of government since April 2001. In the September 2005 House of Representatives ballot, his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected 296 lawmakers to the 480-seat lower house. The electoral victory allowed Koizumi to go ahead with the privatization of Japan Post. In 2003, Koizumi was re-elected as LDP president. The prime minister is expected to officially retire in September.

Russia will host the 2006 G-8 summit in Saint Petersburg. Earlier this month, government sources revealed that Koizumi plans to introduce new environmentally-friendly technology to reduce gas emissions from coal burning. The Japanese prime minister is also expected to call on other world leaders to adopt Japan’s “top-runner system”, which sets the most energy-efficient products as the standards for their respective industries.
