Blagojevich Leads Topinka in Illinois

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Democrat incumbent Rod Blagojevich is the early leader in the Prairie State’s gubernatorial election, according to a poll by SurveyUSA. 43 per cent of respondents would vote for Blagojevich, while 37 per cent would support Republican state treasurer Judy Baar Topinka.

Fifteen per cent of respondents would vote for other candidates, and four per cent are undecided. On Mar. 21, Blagojevich and Topinka won their respective primary elections.

Blagojevich has acted as governor in Illinois since January 2003. The former U.S. congressman defeated Republican Jim Ryan in the November 2002 election with 52 per cent of the vote.

On May 26, Blagojevich and Topinka participated in a televised discussion. Topinka chided the governor for having “the most investigated administration in the history of the state of Illinois.” Blagojevich said his rival’s office was under investigation for using state workers to do political work.

The gubernatorial ballot will take place on Nov. 7. Since 1949, Illinois has had five Republican and five Democratic heads of government.
