(Angus Reid Global Scan) – More adults in Sweden would vote for their governing parties in this year’s legislative election, according to a poll by Temo. 48.6 per cent of respondents would support the Workers’ Party – Social Democrats (S), the Left Party (Vp) or the Environmental Party – The Greens (MP).

A coalition of four centre-right opposition organizations—the Moderate Rally Party (M), the People’s Party Liberals (FpL), the Centre Party (C) and the Christian-Democrats (KD)—is in second place with 47.8 per cent. The opposition alliance had topped the 50 per cent mark in voting intention surveys conducted in March and April.

Prime minister Goran Persson of the Social Democrats has headed the government since 1996. In 2001, Persson’s party elected 144 lawmakers to the 349-seat Diet. Support for the opposition alliance fell by 2.3 points since late April, while backing for the governing coalition increased by 1.7 points.

Current Moderate leader Fredrik Reinfeldt heads the opposition alliance. The Moderates last formed the government from 1991 to 1993 under Carl Bildt. The next legislative ballot has been scheduled for Sept. 17.

On May 22, the leaders of the seven political parties appeared on television to participate in a discussion with young Swedes. Reinfeldt pledged to reduce taxes for employers, as well as lower and middle-income workers. Persson vowed to continue with the “Plus Jobs” program, which seeks to generate employment in specific municipalities.
