Spaniards Oppose Basque Self-Determination Vote

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) – The majority of people in Spain reject holding a vote on the Basque Country’s ties with the rest of Spain, according to a poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser. 62.4 per cent of respondents oppose the initiative proposed by Basque Country president Juan José Ibarretxe, and 58.1 per cent think the Spanish government should do everything it can to stop the vote from happening.

At least 54 per cent of respondents think the country should lift the exemptions on judiciary cooperation and joint defence.

More than a third of respondents remain undecided.
